You can exchange dirty or slightly mutilated notes of Rs 10 or above at any public sector bank.Or you can exchange it at any branch of the Reserve Bank of India and get new money and for this, you do not need to fill up a form.
Notes that have been mutilated or have essential parts of the note, i.e., the name of issuing authority, guarantee, promise clause, signature,Photo of Mahatma Gandhi, ashoka stambha symbol, watermark, etc. are torn or erased, you can replace those notes. You can exchange this too without submitting any form at any public sector bank branch, currency exchange counter of any private bank, or RBI branch.
Other Facilities for Money Exchange
For the convenience of the people, there is also the facility of exchange of mutilated notes through TLR (Triple Lock Receptacle) covers. People can get a TLR cover from the inquiry counter of the Reserve Bank and fill it with your name, address, name of the note deposited, etc. and place it in the said cover and deposit it in a box called Triple Lock Receptacle. This box has been placed at every Issue Officer Inquiry Counter of the Reserve Bank. The prevailing exchange rate of the defaced notes will be remitted through bank draft or pay order. Mutilated notes can be sent to any office of RBI by registered/insured post.
Notes that are extremely dirty, broken, burnt or unfit for circulation can only be exchanged at the issuing offices of the Reserve Bank. Anyone with such notes can approach the officer in the claims section, the exchange branch of RBI, to exchange them and get more information in this regard. Similarly, you can also exchange various types of unusable and tarnished banknotes for new ones at the aforementioned banks.
