Offline Messaging App: “Bitchat” has been Removed from the Indian App Store & Google Play Store

Now, messaging apps that run without internet, SIM card or network towers are under the watchful eye of the central government. The popular offline messaging app ‘Bitchat’, created by Jack Dorsey, co-founder of social media platform ‘X’ (formerly Twitter), has been removed from the Indian app store.
There was a lot of talk about the use of offline messaging apps by protesters during the internet shutdown in Delhi. Subsequently, on the instructions of the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, Apple issued a notice removing ‘Bitchat’ from the Indian App Store. The app is also no longer available from the Google Play Store. After this government move, questions have also been raised about other offline apps that allow chatting without internet.
How Does this Offline Messaging App Work?
These offline messaging apps connect nearby phones to each other via Bluetooth. This creates a βmesh networkβ, which allows messages to be sent from one device to another even without mobile data, Wi-Fi, or the internet.
How will this Affect Users?
The removal of this app from the App Store means that new users will no longer be able to download it. Users who already have the app installed on their phones will not have it automatically deleted from their phones. However, there may be problems with app updates or related support. It has been clarified that downloading APK files from unknown websites can be dangerous for users’ privacy and security.
