Rohit Sharma Passes BCCI’s New ‘Bronco Test’! Knows About this New Fitness Test of BCCI

BCCI has made the Bronco test mandatory along with the Yo-Yo test to get a place in Team India. The Bronco test has been brought from Rugby. It is said to be a tough fitness test. The Bronco Test is known for its ability to challenge a player’s speed and endurance, stamina and recovery. 38 year-old Rohit Sharma has cleared the Bronco test and the Yo-Yo test. Apart from Rohit, Jasprit Bumrah, Shubman Gill, Mohammed Siraj, Washington Sundar, Shardul Thakur, Yashaswi Jaiswal and Prasidh Krishna have also passed the Bronco Test and Yo-Yo Test.

The Indian ODI captain passed the Bronco Test and Yo-Yo Test at the fitness camp held at the BCCI Centre of Excellence.The Bronco test might be new to cricket, but it has long been used in rugby as a high-intensity running drill. The test is used to measure an athlete’s aerobic endurance, speed, and ability to recover from fatigue.

While rugby remains a much more intense sport than cricket, the amount of cricket that is being played in India these days does require players to have higher endurance than arguably a decade before. The Bronco Test is new to the world of cricket, but has long been used as a standard of fitness in rugby.

What is the Bronco Test?

  • In today’s era, cricketing schedules keep players very busy, which requires cricketers to maintain a high level of fitness. With this in mind, the Bronco Test has been designed. It tests the players’ cardiovascular capacity and mental toughness, reflecting the physical demands of modern cricket.
  • In this test, four cones are placed at distances of 0 meters, 20 meters, 40 meters, and 60 meters. Each set involves running up to 20 meters and returning, then running up to 40 meters and returning, and finally running up to 60 meters and returning.
  • In this shuttle pattern, each set has a total of 240 meters of running. Players have to complete five sets of this. In such a case, the total running is 1,200 meters. There is no rest interval of any kind. Upon successful completion of the 5 sets, the player’s time is recorded.

What Does the Bronco Test Help Measure?

  • It assesses a player’s capacity to sustain high-intensity effort over a prolonged period. Running between the wickets is where players make such runs during the course of a cricket match.
  • It requires repeated changes of direction and bursts of speed. During fielding, players are often required to chase shots racing towards the boundary, pick up the ball, change direction, and swiftly throw it back to the pitch area.
  • To endure such bursts of running in a short span of time isn’t easy on the mind. As players are tasked to increase their cardiovascular ability, their mental toughness is also put to a stern test.

Difference Between Bronco Test & Yo-Yo Test?

One of the biggest differences between the Bronco test and the Yo-Yo test is the fact that while the Yo-Yo test measures intermittent endurance, the Bronco test measures continuous aerobic endurance and stamina. There are brief rest periods in the Yo-Yo test, while no such rest period exists in the Bronco test.
