Railway’s New Rule: Indian Railways has Changed the Auto-upgrade Process for Waiting List Tickets; Know Details

Railways has changed the auto-upgrade process for waiting list tickets. Sleeper class tickets cannot be upgraded to First AC now. IRCTC has said that such upgrade facility will not be available even if the berth is vacant.

Railway’s New Rule

Usually passengers on the waiting list are upgraded to a class above the booked class if seats are not available. But as per the new rules, such facilities will no longer be available. These new rules have been implemented to make the seat allocation in reserved coaches in trains more systematic and to control crowding in higher class coaches. The Centre for Railway Information Systems (CRIS) is currently upgrading its software to implement the new rules.

Sleeper Class Tickets Cannot be Upgraded to First AC now

As per the new rules, sleeper class tickets can now be upgraded only up to 2 classes above. Now, sleeper class tickets can be upgraded to a maximum of Third AC or second AC. It cannot be upgraded to first AC. Similarly, Third AC ticket can be upgraded to 1st AC. Passengers will get the auto upgrade facility if they have opted for the auto upgrade option while booking the ticket or if it is selected as ‘yes’ by default. If the passenger selects the ‘No’ option, the ticket will not be upgraded even if there is a seat in the upper category. If you not select any option, then it is considered as Yes by default. Senior citizens and those who select the Lower Berth option can get auto upgrade. Even if upgraded, the Lower Berth guarantee will not be available.
