New Toll Rule: How to Apply for Local Pass?

The National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) has introduced a digital ‘Local Pass’ feature on the Rajmargyatra app. It allows residents living within a 20 km radius of an eligible toll plaza to purchase a monthly pass online for unlimited travel, eliminating the need to physically visit the toll plaza. This is in line with the Government of India’s Digital India vision and the need to enhance ease of living. The new initiative aims to make National Highways journeys smoother by eliminating manual documentation by providing better digital services and ensuring faster access to assistance for commuters.
New Toll Rules : Monthly Pass
The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has launched two major citizen-centric features on its mobile app. One is the online ‘Local Pass’ and the other is a digitally enabled ‘MargMitra’ help desk. By introducing these features, NHAI has strengthened the digital ecosystem for its users.
‘Local Pass’ Feature on Rajmargyatra App
The newly launched ‘Local Pass’ feature enables eligible commuters to purchase toll passes digitally through the Rajmargyatra mobile app without having to visit the toll plaza. The digital local toll pass feature was first launched at the Mundka-Bakkarwala Toll Plaza on Urban Extension Road-2 in Delhi. It will be rolled out to other toll plazas across the country in the coming months.
Residents living within a 20 km radius of an eligible toll plaza can purchase a ‘Local Pass’ digitally through the Rajmargyatra mobile app. This will allow unlimited travel through the respective toll plazas within a month. Earlier, travellers had to visit the toll plaza in person to establish their eligibility and submit supporting documents.
Under the new digital framework, the entire process can now be completed digitally within minutes. The digital application process is integrated with government systems to retrieve verified details automatically. Government digital platforms including DigiLocker and VAHAN to automatically retrieve verified details related to the passenger’s address, vehicle number and linked FASTag. Eligibility for the local pass has been established through GIS-based verification, eliminating manual documentation and ensuring transparency and accuracy, while improving user convenience. After obtaining the ‘local pass’, one will get unlimited travel privileges on the highway. For this, a monthly fee of Rs. 350 will be payable.

How to Apply for Local Pass?
- Download and Register: Install the Rajmargyatra App on your Android or iOS device. Set up your account using your mobile number.
- Access Local Pass Feature: Navigate to the Local Pass section in the application.
- Automated Verification: The app will seek your consent to link with government databases like DigiLocker and VAHAN. This instantly and securely retrieves your address, vehicle registration details, and linked FASTag information.
- GIS-Based Location Check: The app will use your current GIS location to verify that your registered address falls within the 20 km radius eligibility of the toll plaza.
- Make Payment: Once the system successfully verifies your eligibility, you can pay and activate the local pass directly through the app.
Note: Before applying for local pass you should keep in your mind that, the digital pass is being rolled out in phases across national highways in India, so availability may depend on whether your local toll plaza has been integrated into the digital system yet or not.
