Meta’s New Rule for Minors: New Time Limits Hit Instagram and Facebook

Meta is taking a big step to protect minors using social media. Following a crackdown in India on child protection and online abuse allegations, Meta is preparing to implement new rules for minors on Instagram and Facebook. This new rules could include limits on children’s social media usage, including restrictions on feeds, reels, and stories at night. The government is in constant touch with social media platforms to prevent harmful content on social media. According to sources, this is said to be the first step towards making the online world safe for children.

Meta’s New Rule for Minors

To increase the online safety of minors, emphasis is being placed on measures such as tightening the age verification process, hiding like counts, and reporting child-related criminal cases to the Indian Security and Cyber Crime Agency.

  • Time Limits: Minors can only use the Facebook and Instagram app for a maximum of 2 hours per day.
  • Night Mode: Feed, Reels and Stories will be automatically locked for minors from midnight to 6 am.
  • Hide Likes: To reduce social pressure from children, the number of ‘Likes’ will be hidden on posts.
  • Age Verification: The biometric age verification process is being tightened to identify and remove children under 13 from the platform.

Why this Action is Taken?

The NCPCR had issued a notice to the head of Meta India after it came across some ads promoting child abuse on Instagram. The Delhi Police is also investigating it under India’s POCSO Act. Not only in India, but also in the US, Meta has been slapped with a hefty fine of $18 billion (about Rs 1.5 lakh crore) for ignoring the safety of children.
