The Indian Premier League season 18 was called off due to rising tensions between India and Pakistan. Now the remaining matches are set to begin from May 17. Most of the foreign players had left India, now many players are returning to India for tournaments, while many players have refused to return. Almost every team will suffer because of this, many of which were leading the playoff race solely due to the excellent performances of their foreign players.
IPL 2025 Updates
Gujarat Titans
Under the captaincy of Shubman Gill, Gujarat Titans are at the top of the points table, with the team’s overseas players also making significant contributions. Former England captain Jos Buttler and South African fast bowlers Gerald Coetzee and Kagiso Rabada will find it difficult to return to India. The South African Cricket Board has asked its players to return by May 26, although it is possible that players who are not part of the WTC final could be exempted. Only England players who are not part of the ODI series against the West Indies will be able to play. Other foreign players from Gujarat include Rashid Khan, Sherfane Rutherford, Karim Janat, they are ready to return India.
Kolkata Knight Riders
Kolkata Knight Riders, led by Ajinkya Rahane, will play against RCB on May 17. This is a do or die match for KKR, if they lose this match then Kolkata will be out of the playoff race. Most of the KKR players are expected to arrive in Bengaluru between Wednesday night and Thursday morning. West Indies players Sunil Narine, Andre Russell, Rovman Powell and team mentor Dwayne Bravo are in Dubai. Wicketkeeper-batsman Rahmanullah Gurbaz has returned to his country. South Africa’s Anrich Nortje is on the continent, he will also join KKR in Bengaluru.
Sunrisers Hyderabad
The Sunrisers Hyderabad management has clarified that there is currently no information regarding the return of Heinrich Klaasen, Eshan Malinga, Kamindu Mendis and Wiaan Mulder. Captain Pat Cummins and Travis Head are included in the WTC final squad, although some reports claim that they may return to India. However, his team is out of the play-off race, so his return or not will have no impact on his team.
Punjab Kings
Punjab Kings have the highest number of Australian players. However, Cricket Australia has made it clear that it will support players who want to return to India for IPL-2025. Under the captaincy of Shreyas Iyer, Punjab are a strong contender to enter the playoff race. Xavier Bartlett, Azmatullah Omarzai and Mitchell Owen have returned to the team. Marcus Stoinis, Marco Jansen, Josh Inglis and Aaron Hardie are also likely to make it to India. Jansen and Inglis are part of the WTC finals squad starting June 11. Head coach Ricky Ponting and assistant coaches Brad Haddin and James Hopes are in India. They also boarded the flight to return but they landed after the India-Pakistan ceasefire.
Royal Challengers Bangalore
Fast bowler Josh Hazlewood has been in fine form so far in IPL-2025, with his team in the top 2 and on the verge of a play-off berth. However, it is difficult for Josh Hazlewood to return, he is not fully fit although he will play in the World Test Championship final starting on June 11. Top-order batsman Jacob Bethell has also been included in England’s ODI squad, meaning he is unlikely to play in the play-offs alongside West Indies’ Romario Shepherd. Lungi Ngidi is also part of the WTC final and Cricket South Africa has asked its players to assemble by May 26.
Delhi Capitals
Now Delhi’s remaining matches are crucial, they have to win two matches. Mitchell Starc’s lethal bowling has helped Delhi win many close matches this season. It will be tough for Starc to return to India. Opener Jake Fraser-McGurk’s return is also in doubt. The rest of the overseas players are expected to join the franchise. Test team member Tristan Stubbs will not be available after the league stage matches.
Mumbai Indians
Ryan Rickelton and Corbin Bosch have been included in the final squad for the World Test Championship, who have been asked by South Africa to join their squad by May 26. The team will leave for England on May 30. Will Jacks has international commitments. Afghanistan spinner Mujeeb Ur Rahman is available for the rest of the match.
