4 Ways to Call a Doctor on the Train
Call 139 Helpline Number
This is the all-in-one emergency number of the Railways. Call this number and select the language and then select the ‘Medical Assistance’ option.
Inform TTE or Onboard Staff
Immediately inform the TTE of your coach, train guard or pantry car staff. They will alert the Railway Control Room through wireless or message.
Rail Madad App or Portal
Rail Madad is the official, completely digitized grievance redressal platform introduced by Indian Railways to streamline and expedite passenger support. You just open the Rail Madad app on your phone and submit your complaint in the Medical Assistance section.
Post on Social Media
Post your issue, PNR number, train number and seat number on social media, tagging @RailMinIndia and @RailwaySeva.
Information Required for a Request for Assistance
While requesting assistance, it is important to provide the following information:
- PNR number (this provides live train location and seat information)
- Train name and number
- Coach and seat/berth number
- Current condition of the patient (chest pain, high fever, vomiting, fainting or injury)
How Railways Works After Getting Information?
As soon as the information is received, the Railway Control Room issues an alert and informs the Railway Hospital/Medical Team at the nearest major station. Before the train arrives, the medical team is alerted on the platform with the necessary emergency medicines. As soon as the train stops, the doctor comes directly to your seat and treats you. If the patient’s condition is very critical, the train can be stopped at a non-stoppage station as an emergency.
Medical Fees and Hospitalization
Railways charges a fixed consultation fee of Rs. 100 for the services of an onboard doctor, for which a government receipt is also issued. While basic medicines for primary care are available free of cost, special medicines may have to be paid separately. If the condition of the patient is critical, they are admitted to the nearest railway hospital or a larger government/private hospital by ambulance.
