Whenever unique handles drop on a massive platform, username squatting and impersonation become major risks. Meta is already steps ahead with several built-in protections:
- Meta Cross-Reservation: Usernames currently active on Instagram and Facebook are automatically reserved for those same owners.
- VIP Protection: Handles for celebrities, public figures, brands, and government entities are permanently locked to prevent scams.
- Business Priority: Verified organizations and creators get first dibs on claiming their official handles.
Catching Up to the Competition
With this update, WhatsApp is taking a page out of the playbook of privacy-first apps like Signal, which have long allowed phone-numberless chatting.
