Elon Musk’s Starlink has received a license to provide satellite internet services in India, which will open a new chapter in internet connectivity in rural and remote areas. Union Communications Minister Jyotiraditya Sindhiya announced that Starlink has been granted a unified license. He said, “The framework for spectrum allocation and gateway installation is ready, which will ensure a smooth rollout.”
Telecom Department Approved Starlink’s Application
The Department of Telecom (DoT) approved Starlink’s application in July, which was delayed from 2021 due to regulatory scrutiny and spectrum allocation issues. With this license, Starlink is now awaiting spectrum allocation, which will be finalised by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI).
Price and Plans
The one-time price for Starlink’s hardware kit (satellite dish, router, and mounting hardware) will be around Rs. 33,000. The monthly unlimited data plan will cost around Rs. 3,000, while introductory promotional plans can start at Rs. 850. Internet speeds will range from 25 to 220 Mbps.
According to a report by 2023, 65% of India’s rural population lacks reliable internet. Starlink’s low-Earth orbit satellites will help bridge this digital divide. Starlink will initially serve 2 million customers, primarily targeting rural and remote areas. Starlink will compete head-to-head with Bharti Airtel-backed Eutelsat OnWeb and Reliance Jio’s SES. These companies are also awaiting spectrum allocation. Starlink is expected to start service in late 2025 or early 2026.
