Wrong UPI Payment: What to Do If you Make UPI Payment to the Wrong Account?

What to Do If you Make UPI Payment to the Wrong Account?

UPI payments have made money transactions very easy and fast. However, sometimes in a hurry or due to carelessness, money is transferred to the wrong number or unknown QR code. In such a situation, it is important to take immediate action without panicking.

Money sent to the wrong account doesn’t disappear forever. Although the transaction made using UPI PIN is deemed to be authorized by you, the bank cannot directly reverse it itself. Whether the money will be refunded or not depends on how quickly you file a complaint.

What to Do If you Make UPI Payment to the Wrong Account?

In case of a mistaken payment, first check the transaction status on your UPI app such as PhonePe, Google Pay, Paytm or BHIM. If the transaction shows Pending or Processing and then fails, then the money will be refunded to your bank account. If the payment was successful and the money was deducted from your bank, then assume that the money has been credited to the recipient’s account. Don’t wait for it to be refunded automatically.

File a Complaint with the UPI App and your Bank Immediately

Go to the Help & Support or Raise Dispute/Complaint section of the UPI app from which you made the payment such as GPay, PhonePe, Paytm, BHIM, etc. and report the transaction.

Contact your Bank

Immediately contact your bank’s customer care or visit your home branch. Provide the bank with the UPI Transaction ID, Reference Number, date and screenshot. The bank may contact another bank branch and request the recipient to refund the money.

File a Complaint on the NPCI Portal

If you do not get any resolution from the UPI app or the bank, then go to the official website of the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) at npci.org.in and file your complaint under the ‘Dispute Redressal Mechanism’.

What will Happen After Filed the Complaint?

Many people think that the bank will deduct money from the other person’s account and send it directly to their account, but that’s not actually the case. Since you have made the payment yourself using your UPI PIN, the bank cannot withdraw money from the recipient’s account without their permission. The bank can only contact the person or freeze (block) their account if necessary.

In most cases, people return the money voluntarily after the bank explains it. If the person refuses to return the money, the legal process can take time.
