Instagram rolled out a new global update by introducing a feature called Instants. Tucked right into the bottom-right corner of your direct message (DM) inbox, it’s marketed as a raw, unfiltered way to share spontaneous, disappearing snapshots of your day with friends. But instead of organic connection, it’s causing absolute chaos.
Because of a highly frustrating user interface design, thousands of users are accidentally blasting unedited, accidental photos to their entire mutual followers list without realizing it. If you’ve fallen victim to the sudden camera trigger or just want the clutter out of your inbox, you aren’t alone. Here is everything you need to know to take back control of your privacy.
What is Instagram “Instants”?
Instagram globally launched Instants, a feature engineered for sharing raw, disappearing moments in real-time. Located via the mini photo stack in the bottom-right corner of your inbox, it promises authentic connection but its execution has left many users feeling exposed.
When you open up Instagram’s new Instants section for the first time by tapping the mini photo stack in the bottom-right corner of your inbox, the app opens up a brief introduction about the feature that informs users that Instants disappear, there’s no viewers list, and that reactions and replies are private. The app then quickly takes you through the process of viewing and reacting to Instants.
Once you get to the camera, underneath it is a shutter button, and below that is a toggle that lets you choose between “Friends” and “Close Friends.” By default, it’s set to “Friends.”
The Catch: Automatic Broadcasting
The moment you tap the shutter button inside the Instants camera, the photo is immediately blasted to your entire Friends list.
Unlike standard stories or posts, there is no preview or confirmation screen. Unless you manually toggle the setting from “Friends” to “Close Friends” before shooting, everyone sees it.
How to Turn Off Instagram Instants Permanently?
If you don’t want this feature taking up real estate in your inbox, Instagram has thankfully included a way to disable it.
To turn off Instants on both iOS and Android, follow these simple steps:
- Go to your Instagram Profile and tap the Three-Line Menu in the top right.
- Scroll down to the What you see section and select Content Preferences.
- Toggle on the switch that says “Hide Instants in Inbox”.
Note: Turning off the feature from your inbox doesn’t always kill the push notifications. To stop the pinging, go to Settings > Notifications > Instants and toggle them off entirely. If you just want a temporary break, you can hold down the Instants pile in your inbox and swipe right to mute them.
The Quick Fix: How to “Snooze” Instants?
If you don’t want to dig into your settings and just want a break from the clutter, you can temporarily hide them right from your feed:
- Press and hold the stack of Instants in your DM inbox.
- Swipe right to temporarily snooze or hide the row. (If you ever want them back, just hold down the same area and swipe left).
How to Undo an Accidental “Instant”?
If you accidentally snapped a photo you didn’t mean to share, act fast:
1. The Instant Undo Button
Immediately after you take a photo, a small “Undo” prompt will flash right underneath the shutter button. If you catch it in time, tapping this will instantly recall the photo from the digital ether.
2. The Archive Method
If you missed the initial prompt, tap the Four-Box Icon (Archive) at the top right of the camera. From there, you can delete the Instant, which will unsend it to any friends who haven’t opened it yet.
Why Instagram Instants is Stressing Everyone Out?
When you open the Instants camera for the first time, the onboarding process breezes through a quick tutorial explaining that the photos are private, can’t be screenshotted, and disappear after being viewed.
What Meta doesn’t explicitly scream at you is how the shutter button works: The exact millisecond you tap the shutter button, the raw photo is immediately sent to everyone you follow back.
There is no review screen. There is no confirmation pop-up. Unless you manually toggle the tiny setting at the bottom from “Friends” to “Close Friends” before you press that button, your photo goes live instantly to a wide audience. For an app where users are conditioned to curate and review what they post, this zero-buffer system is a privacy nightmare.
