A major crackdown on social media use for children and teenagers is coming to India. Keeping in mind the mental health and cyber safety of vulnerable children, the central government is now planning to set a specific age limit for the use of social media. For this, the government is in talks with various tech companies.
Social Media to be Banned for Children in India!
Speaking at the ‘India AI Impact Summit’ held in New Delhi, Union IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnav said that it is very important to set an age limit to protect children from the harmful effects of the digital world. In addition, discussions are ongoing with platforms to address the growing problem of ‘deepfakes’ on social media. While many countries around the world have already adopted this rule, India is also preparing to move forward in this direction. India has over 400 million Facebook and Instagram users, the highest in the world. In such a situation, imposing an age limit would have a huge impact on these companies.
Australia has become the first country to ban platforms like Facebook, Instagram and YouTube for children under 16. Spain and other countries in the European Union are also considering similar rules. The Andhra Pradesh government is also planning to ban social media for children under 16.
On the other hand, social media companies have opposed the ban. They say that the age verification process is cumbersome and that the rule could lead users to unregulated or unsafe apps.
However, keeping in mind the mental health and cyber safety of children, the central government is preparing to bring this new rule in the guise of ‘Digital Personal Data Protection’ (DPDP).
