Social Media Platforms to Remove Any Objectionable Content within 3 Hours

The Indian government has taken a major step to curb the misuse of AI and deepfakes. Under new IT rules, social media platforms will now have to remove any objectionable content within 3 hours. This rule was notified on February 10 and will be implemented across the country from February 20.

Social Media Platforms Remove Any Objectionable Content within 3 Hours

If any audio, video or photo is created with the help of AI, then platforms will have to clearly label it as ‘AI Generated’. This is classified as ‘Synthetically Generated Information’ (SGI).

Earlier the time given to remove a harmful post was 36 hours, it has now been reduced to just 3 hours. Similarly, the resolution time for other complaints has also been reduced from 15 days to 7 days.

Now, when users upload content, they are required to declare whether it was created by AI or not. Platforms will have to verify its authenticity using automated tools. The content will use metadata or special identification processes to identify where the misleading deepfake video actually originated. Removing or manipulating this metadata is prohibited.

Misuse of AI and Deepfakes will be Treated as Common Crime

The government has made it clear that if any platform fails to identify and label AI content, they will face legal action. If AI is used for child sexual abuse, fraud, or misconduct, it will be treated as a common crime.
