Instagram has rolled out a new update. The company has announced a limit on the number of hashtags that can be used in content on its platform. This will apply to both reels and posts. This means users cannot use hashtags as they wish, as before. Now this limit has been increased to 5.

Now, you can only add 5 hashtags to a post. Earlier, the platform allowed users to add 30 hashtags to a post. But now this has been reduced to 5. According to the Meta-owned social media giant, using common and targeted hashtags can significantly help creators with content discovery and performance.
The platform said the move is aimed at preventing abuse of the functionality. Instagram made the announcement through its Creators account. According to the company, using short but accurate and relevant hashtags not only improves post visibility but also improves user experience.
What is Hashtags on Instagram?
Launched in 2011, hashtags have been a long-standing feature on Instagram that helps with content discovery. According to the tech giant, this functionality enables posts to appear more frequently in topic-based searches, trending lists, and algorithm-driven recommendations.
Instagram said, “We’re finding that instead of using many common hashtags, fewer (up to 5) more targeted hashtags can improve both the performance of your content and people’s experience on Instagram.”
The platform wants creators to be more intentional with the hashtags they use and focus on relevance to the content they publish. Giving an example, Instagram said that beauty creators can use beauty-related hashtags to help attract users interested in content related to beauty treatments.
