New Railways Rule: Now the Fine for Travelling with Excess Luggage will be 6 Times Higher!

The Indian Railways has come up with a plan to curb ‘overloaded’ passengers. Passengers who board trains with trolley bags, grain sacks, large boxes and household items will now have to be careful. The Railways is planning to impose a penalty of six times the luggage booking rate on passengers travelling with luggage exceeding the prescribed free allowance.

Sometimes grains in AC, sometimes big boxes in sleepers. Nowadays, rail travel is becoming more of a burden than a comfort and convenience. Because passengers not only carry 2-3 large trolley bags, but often they also load bags of food grains, household furniture, LEDs, utensils and shopping items on the train. This causes inconvenience to other passengers and creates problems of safety and lack of space.

People’s Whims, Inconvenience to Other Passengers

A common sight during the journey is that people are boarding the train carrying multiple heavy bags, gas stoves, cylinders, electronics, bags of food grains and commercial goods. This leads to a shortage of space and often blocks the tracks. This is causing great inconvenience to the elderly, women and disabled passengers.

What do the Railway Rules Say?

The Railways provides free luggage allowance to every passenger according to his class:

Apart from this, there is also a marginal allowance of up to a few kilos. If the goods are more than this, then it is mandatory to make advance booking for sending it in a break-van.

What Happens if you Break the Rules?

If you are caught with excess baggage without a booking during check-in, you may be fined up to 6 times the baggage charge. In some cases, the baggage may be taken off the train.

What if the Goods are Stolen or Damaged?

If the booked goods are stolen or damaged, the Railways will compensate the passengers, unless the value of the goods has been declared in advance. However, compensation of up to Rs 100 per kilogram is provided. Those who declared the price and charged may get compensation of the full price.

Railways’ appeal: Let the journey be the journey, Do not Make it a Cargo

The clear appeal of the Railways is that the passengers should follow the rules. Book your luggage, pay attention to free allowances, and treat the train like a truck. This will make the journey enjoyable and will not inconvenience other passengers.
