A big change is going to come for travelers on the country’s national highways from April 1. The government has taken an important step towards making the Rajpath Yatra completely digital. Cash payment options at toll plazas are now being phased out. In future, toll tax will be paid only through FASTag or UPI. The government believes that this will not only make travel easier but also save time, fuel and money.
New Toll Rule
Complete Ban on Cash Payments
In an interview with a media platform, Union Road Transport and Highways Ministry Secretary V. Umashankar said that India is rapidly moving towards a digital economy. Earlier, UPI payments were introduced at toll plazas, which were well received. Now, the government has decided that cash payments at toll plazas will be completely banned after April 1. From that date, only FASTag and UPI will be valid.
Once this decision is implemented, cash lanes will be completely eliminated at toll plazas across the country. This will eliminate the long queues caused by manual toll collection.Till now, many people used cash lanes despite having FASTags, resulting in traffic jams during festivals and rush hours. Cashless tolling will make the system faster, more transparent and reliable.
Both Time and Fuel will be Saved
Frequent stopping at toll plazas increases fuel costs. Drivers also face inconvenience due to frequent braking. According to V. Umashankar, each stop wastes both time and fuel, which increases significantly during long-distance journeys. A cashless system will significantly reduce this loss.
Next Steps Towards Barrier-free Tolling
This government decision is also a preparation for a major change that will be implemented in the future. The Multi-Lane Free Flow (MLFF) tolling system will be implemented in the country very soon. Under this system, there will be no barriers at the toll plaza and vehicles will be able to pass through the area without stopping. The toll fee will be deducted automatically through FASTag and vehicle identification system.
Government’s Appeal to Travellers
The government has urged all travellers to keep their FASTags active and ensure sufficient balance before April 1. Also, be prepared to pay through UPI. This move towards cashless tolling and barrier-free highways is set to completely transform the road travel experience in India. In the future, toll plaza congestion will be eliminated, and travel will be more comfortable and faster than ever before.
