ChatGPT is an advanced AI assistant that goes far beyond simple Q&A. Through natural language, it can generate text (emails, code, and documents), analyze data and build spreadsheets, conduct deep web research, and create polished websites or presentations. But some of ChatGPT’s most useful controls are switched off by default or it can buried where casual users never look. This features are not marked as a “smarter” features but when you enabled, they significantly change how the tool behaves for you specifically. Go through this article and know 3 hidden ChatGPT settings. In these 3 settings each fixes a different complaint. One controls how hard it thinks, one shapes how ChatGPT talks to you and other one decides what it keeps.

3 Hidden ChatGPT Settings

1. The Thinking-level Toggle

The ChatGPT thinking-level toggle gives you direct control over how much reasoning effort the AI uses before it replies. It lets you balance response speed with deep, careful analysis. If you’ve ever felt that ChatGPT’s reasoning mode is either too shallow or maddeningly slow, then this is the fix and most of the people don’t knows it’s there.

How the Thinking-Level Toggle WorksThink of the AI’s “thinking” like a human taking a test. When you use one of the Thinking models, ChatGPT can spend more or less effort reasoning before it answers. More time generally means more thorough, careful responses; less time means a faster reply. The toggle lets you choose, rather than living with one default.

This one is a paid feature; the granular levels require Plus or above. It also rolled out on the web first, and the mobile apps have historically lagged behind, so you may not see the same control on your phone. And remember the default already reasons, so this changes how much, not whether it does or not.

How to Turn it On

You can easily adjust this effort level in your chat composer. In the model picker at the top of the chat, select a Thinking model. A thinking-level control then appears in the message box. Plus and Business users get Standard (the default) and Extended; Pro users also get Light (fastest) and Heavy (deepest). Your choice sticks for future chats until you change it.

On Desktop Web: Above the chat input box (on the left), click the current mode label (e.g., Instant or Thinking).

On Mobile (iOS & Android): Tap the model or mode name above your keyboard to change the setting.

Depending on your subscription plan, you can choose between Instant (fastest), Standard (default reasoning), or Extended/Heavy (deepest analysis for Pro/Business tiers).

2. Custom Instructions

Stop wasting time typing the same context, tone rules, and formatting preferences over and over. By tweaking ChatGPT’s Personalization menu, you can permanently program how it responds to you. Fill out these three specific text boxes to make the AI sound like it already knows you.

Custom Instructions is a standing brief that applies to every new conversation. Instead of telling ChatGPT who you are and how you want it to respond at the start of each chat, you set it once. It tells the model what to call you, who you are and what you do, what traits you want it to have and any rules to follow and those preferences carry into every conversation until you change them.

Tell ChatGPT who you are and what you do. This prevents you from having to explain your industry or skill level in every single prompt.

What to include: Your job title, your main goals, and the subjects you work with daily.

Example: “I run a boutique fitness studio and handle all our Instagram and Facebook promotion myself. I know how to check basic metrics like likes and follower counts, but I need practical, step-by-step guidance on how to turn those views into actual trial memberships without getting lost in high-level marketing theory.”

Stop getting robotic, generic answers by defining exactly how the AI should behave.

What to include: The exact tone of voice you prefer and specific behavioral rules you want it to follow.

Example: “Maintain a direct, pragmatic tone like a candid peer. If my strategy has flaws, challenge my assumptions and suggest alternative approaches. Avoid using semicolons or exclamation marks, and use no more than one emoji per reply.”

Tired of manually asking for bullet points, bolded text, or short paragraphs? This box sets your default formatting.

What to include: How you want your final text structured.

Example: “Keep your answers short and easy to read. Use bullet points for main ideas, keep paragraphs to just 2 or 3 sentences, and put a quick summary at the top. Don’t waste time on long intros.”

3. Temporary Chat

Temporary Chat is ChatGPT’s version of incognito mode. It doesn’t appear in your history, it isn’t used to train or improve the models and it doesn’t read from or write to your Memory. When it’s over, it’s gone from your ongoing context. But it’s not entirely a true incognito mode. For safety and abuse monitoring, OpenAI may retain temporary chats for up to about 30 days before deleting them, so treat it as “kept out of my profile,” not “vanished instantly.” And because it deliberately ignores your Memory and saved context, you lose your personalization inside that chat. Essentially, it’s a blank slate by design.
